How Long Does It Take to Ship a Car Across the Country?

When customers ask how long auto transport takes, what they're really asking is two separate questions: (1) how long until a carrier picks up my car, and (2) how long until it arrives. Let's break both down.

Typical transit times by distance

  • Under 200 miles: 1–2 days
  • 200–500 miles: 1–3 days
  • 500–1,000 miles: 3–5 days
  • 1,000–1,500 miles: 4–6 days
  • 1,500–2,500 miles: 5–8 days
  • Coast-to-coast (2,500–3,000+ miles): 7–9 days

These transit times measure pickup-to-delivery. Add 1–5 days for the carrier dispatch window (the time between when you book and when a truck physically arrives at your pickup address).

The two phases of auto transport timing

Phase 1: Dispatch (1–5 days)

After you book, your shipment enters our load board and we match it with a carrier whose route fits yours. Popular routes (major metro to major metro) often dispatch within 24 hours. Rural pickups, snowbird-season Florida lanes, and unusual routes (e.g., Montana to Maine) can take 3–5 days to find an ideal carrier.

Phase 2: Transit (the times above)

Once your car is loaded, federal regulations cap drivers at 11 hours of driving per day and require 10 consecutive hours off duty. That works out to ~550 miles of actual road travel per day. Add stops for other deliveries, weigh stations, and weather, and the real-world average is closer to 400–500 miles per day.

What can slow your shipment down

  • Weather: snow storms in the Rockies, hurricanes on the Gulf Coast, severe ice on I-80 — all add 1–3 days
  • Rural pickup/delivery: every detour off the interstate costs the driver time
  • Driver health/breakdowns: occasional but unavoidable
  • Demand season: snowbird season Florida lanes and summer-rush California lanes can extend dispatch by 2–3 days
  • Specific pickup/delivery time windows: requesting a strict 2-hour window slows everything

What can speed your shipment up

  • Flexibility on pickup window (5+ day window = faster dispatch and lower price)
  • Major metro to major metro routes
  • Standard mid-week pickup (Monday–Wednesday is fastest)
  • Open transport (more carriers available than enclosed)
  • Booking in the off-season

Expedited / guaranteed shipping

If you have a hard deadline (auction delivery, military PCS report date, etc.), we can offer guaranteed pickup windows — usually for a 20–35% upcharge. The carrier dedicates a slot specifically for your vehicle and won't combine your trip with delays.

How to track your shipment in real time

Prestige Auto Shipping gives you direct contact information for your driver as soon as your vehicle is loaded. You can text or call them any time during transit for live updates. Our dispatch team also performs check-ins every 24–48 hours and proactively communicates any delays.

Frequently asked questions

Can my car arrive on a specific day?
We can guarantee a pickup day with our expedited service. Delivery day is harder to guarantee because road conditions, weather, and other deliveries affect the carrier's pace. Most of the time we land within a 1–2 day window of the target delivery date.
What happens if my pickup is delayed?
We communicate proactively. Most delays are weather-related and 1–2 days max. If a delay would cost you significantly (missed flight, etc.), we'll work with you to find a solution.
How fast can you pick up my car in an emergency?
On popular routes (e.g., NYC, Miami, LA, Dallas), we've dispatched carriers within 4 hours of booking. Tell us your situation and we'll be honest about what's realistic.
